There have currently been more confirmed cases of infectious gastroenteritis in Miyazaki than any other prefecture in Japan this year.

The spread of the virus has been faster than normal years, and it is expected to continue to spread.

Let us work to prevent infection through daily measures and thorough hand washing!

◎Infection via the Norovirus
Gastroenteritis infections occur throughout the year, but infections are most prominent in winter. The main cause of gastroenteritis is the norovirus.
The norovirus is highly contagious; and one to two days after infection it produces symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pains. Those with weak resistance, such as children and the elderly, are likely to develop more severe symptoms, so caution is necessary.

◎Path of Infection

○Oral Transmission of the Virus

Infection caused by eating foods contaminated with the norovirus(oysters or other bivalves) raw or without thoroughly cooking them 　　　　first (food poisoning).
Infection through contact with feces or vomit from another individual infected by the norovirus.

◎Preventing Infections

①Disciplined Hand Washing

Wash hands thoroughly with running water and soap. Be sure to wipe 　hands with a clean towel or paper towels.

Be sure to wash hands before cooking or eating and after disposing of 　toiletries or human waste.

②Handling of Foods

When buying perishable foods (meat, fish, vegetables, etc.), only buy 　　those that are fresh, and be sure to uphold expiration dates.

Be sure to thoroughly cook foods (foods should be heated to 85℃ for 　over one minute)

Maintain the cleanliness of cooking utensils (knife, cutting board, rag, 　etc.) by disinfecting with boiling water or household bleach (NOTE:bleach can be dangerous when used on certain household items. Check proper methods before disinfecting items with bleach).

③Bath

Wash your bathtub to keep it clean. Be sure to properly wash the area　around your rectum before soaking in the bath.

Avoid soaking in the bath when suffering from diarrhea.

Avoid sharing wash cloths or bath towels.

◎Early Detection

Get examined by a doctor if you suspect infection. By receiving medical treatment you can prevent symptoms from worsening and secondary infections, so it is important to NOT rely on over the counter medicines 　　for stopping diarrhea and to get examined at a medical facility if you develop symptoms.
　　　

News for Foreign Residents in Japan !
On July 9th, 2012, the Alien Registration Act will be abolished and a new residency management system will be put into place. Under the new system, the Basic Resident Act will applied to foreign residents, and foreign residents with a mid- to long-term “Status of Residence” will be issued Resident Cards in place of the current Alien Registration Cards. Anyone interested in learning about this new system in detail can check the web pages listed below, phone the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Call Center, or pick up a pamphlet at the International Foundation.
