Terebikko Diary

It's this time of the year again for weekends of fun at hanabi taikai (fireworks festivals), feasting on jidori (Miyazaki's wild range chicken) and kakigori (flavoured shaved ice)! On my first summer in Miyazaki three years ago, I wondered why my Japanese friends and students never seem to grow sick of going to such matsuri (festival), for nothing new comes to these festival bazaars year after year: Takoyaki (octopus balls), yakisoba (fried noodles), crepes, and kingyo-sukui (goldfish scooping game)…what more can you get?! I remember my Osaka friend had a good laugh when we went to one of the fireworks festival in a neighboring town two years ago. As compared to Osaka's festivals, whereby fireworks are fired in dozens per second, we got only ONE shot every 10 seconds! (So that ther would be enough to fill up the 30mins I guess!ha.) But my friend also said she liked it better here;where people take time to appreciate the beautiful things in life, as opposed to busy Osaka people who have so much to access to yet so little patience and time to enjoy. So I guess going to a matsuri isn't so much about how much you get to do there, but how you feel and what you want to do. Have fun!
