Preparing for  Typhoons(2007 July)

Typhoons frequently strike Japan from August through October. The powerful typhoon No.4 already hit Miyazaki this month, causing disastrous floods and landslides. With the arrival of full-scale typhoon season, we will provide you with information to help you be prepared.

 When it is announced that a typhoon is approaching your area.

 ・Listen carefully to weather reports on television and radio. You can also get up-to-date information from the internet. Meteorological Agency Website (English version )(

・Make sure that rain gutters and drains are free and clear of debris.

 ・Bring inside laundry poles, plant pots, and other objects outside that might fly away.

 ・To protect windows without shutters from flying objects propelled by strong winds, tape the windows up with masking tape. Pull the curtains closed to prevent broken glass from flying around.

・For electric outages, prepare a flashlight and portable radio and recharge your cell phone.

 ・Prepare for water shortages by storing drinking water and water for daily use.

  When a typhoon has approached or hit your area

 ・Donít go outside and stay away from dangerous spots. Some areas may be at great risk of unexpectedly high tides, flooding, or landslides caused by the typhoon.

・Go home before public transportation is halted due to the typhoon.

・If you live near a river, be aware of swelling conditions.

・If you feel that you are in danger, quickly evacuate even if evacuation orders or instructions have yet to be announced.

 ・Ask your neighbors or residentís association to give you information if your area is in danger.

 It is too late to start preparing when the typhoon is already approaching. Be prepared by checking the weather report before the typhoon approaches. Frequently check the weather news on TV and radio for the latest typhoon information and warnings. Ask your neighbors and your local community association to notify you when you should evacuate and when evacuation orders or instructions are announced.
