Regarding the use of Internet(2007.1)

For most foreign residents, e-mail is the most convenient way to keep in touch with friends and family in their home countries. This month we will offer you some information about the Internet.

Setting up an Internet connection at home

You will need some form of connection and an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The two ISP types are: (1) National providers, who offer service throughout Japan and (2) Local providers, who only offer service in local areas. After choosing a connection (discussed below), choose an ISP. The three most common ways to connect your computer to the Internet are as follows:
*Service areas vary depending on the type of connection, so please confirm what services are available in your area.

(1)Fiber (Optical Fiber to Your Home)

This option uses an optical fiber cable. The connection speed is very fast (100Mbps-bps is a unit that describes a connection speed), so this sort of connection allows you to view high-definition video files smoothly. This service is recommended for users who want full enjoyment of the Internet. This service is available even if you don't have telephone line, but you have to pay installation fees to have optical fiber cable put in. Service Area: Only city areas in Miyazaki Prefecture

(2)Cable (CATV)

This option uses the same cable as cable TV. The advantages are: ① relatively low cost, ② you can set it up along with cable TV, ③ available without a telephone line. The disadvantage is the cable installation cost.
Service Area: Only city areas in Miyazaki Prefecture

(3)ADSL

This option uses a telephone line. The advantages are: ① if you have an analog telephone line, you don't need to deal with the hassles and cost of installation, ② available to people who live in apartment blocks without access to fiber and CATV connections. The disadvantage is that the speed decreases the further you are from NTT.
Service Area: Almost all areas in Miyazaki Prefecture

Facilities offering Internet access

You can use the Internet and e-mail at Internet cafes (a typical fee is 100 yen for 15-20 minutes). If you use e-mail, it is wise to register for a free e-mail service such as Google, Yahoo, or Hotmail.
In addition, there are several public places where you can use the Internet for free. However, e-mail is not available at these places. If you don't use e-mail, please make use of these facilities. Examples include:

Libraries

The Prefectural Library(in Miyazaki City)and some of local libraries offer Internet access. Please inquire at your nearest library about availability.

CARINO (Miyazaki City Center) 8F

You can use the Internet at the PC corner. The Miyazaki International Plaza, which offers information for foreign residents about general matters and life in Miyazaki Prefecture, is located on the same floor, so please stop by and see us.

With cell phone

In general, Japanese cell phones have internet service that enables you to view simple websites and use e-mail. Most phones have Japanese function menus, but English-friendly models are available. For more information, inquire at a cell phone shop.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact the Miyazaki International Foundation at (Tel) 0985-32-8457, (Fax) 0985-32-8512, or (email) miyainfo@mif.or.jp.
