Re-entry Permission to Japan(2006.12)
As the season for Christmas and New Year celebrations draws near, you may be planning to go back to your home country temporarily. In order to leave Japan temporarily and return within your allocated period of stay, you will need to obtain a re-entry permit at the immigration office before your departure. A re-entry permit allows you to maintain your residence status without the need for a new visa. This month, we offer you some information about Re-Entry Permission and other Residency permissions obtained at the immigration office.
Re-Entry Permission

Single entry :3,000 yen (Paid by revenue
Multiple entry:6,000 yen stamp: "inshi")
〈Valid Period〉
Re-Entry permission is valid for up to three years (four years for special permanent residents), not to extend beyond the expiration date of your visa.
*It is wise to obtain your Re-Entry Permit two weeks prior to departure from Japan.
Permission to Engage in Activities Outside of One's Current Status
For Example: A student wants to take up a part time job(arubaito).
Permission is required when a foreign national desires to engage in activities such as taking up a part time job from which the person gets financial reward, other than that permitted under the status of residence.
Students generally have to ask their school about applying for this permission.
Permission to Change Status of Residence
For Example: Marrying a Japanese national.
An application must be filed with the immigration office in order to change your offical reason for residing in Japan.
Permission to Extend Period of Stay
For Example: To continue working as an English teacher in Japan.
Permission is needed to extend the period of residence in the current activity. You must apply before the current period expires. You can apply for the extension 2 months prior to your expiry date.
Permission to Acquire Status of Residence
For Example: In the case of a foreign couple having a baby.
Permission is required when a foreign national who was born in Japan or who has renounced Japanese nationality desires to stay in Japan.
