Preparing for Typhoons

Many typhoons draw near Miyazaki every year in August and September. Last September, Typhoon No. 14 caused tremendous damage in Miyazaki Prefecture.

Preparing your home inside and out

It is too late to start preparing for a Typhoon once it is already on its way. To avoid last minute panic, check your house and the surrounding area.

Roof

・Mend cracks, splits, gaps, and peeling roof tiles, as well as curled up and peeling metal sheeting.
・Make sure your antenna is secure.

Rain gutters

・Check for peeling paint and disconnects at the connection points.
・Make sure the gutters are clear of debris.

House wall

・Check for unmended cracks and damage.

Window glass

・Check for cracks, looseness, and misalignment.
・Close your shutters when a typhoon draws near.
Protect windows without shutters by taping them up with masking tape and drawing the curtains.

Indoor and Outdoor Walls

・Check for cracked, damaged, and shaky points.

Propane gas

・Make sure tanks are securely anchored
*Never attempt to make outdoor repairs in strong wind and rain.
*To avoid accidents, never go outside to look around during heavy rain and wind.

Evacuation

Last year many people evacuated their homes because of flooding and landslides. Early evacuation saves lives, especially with landslides. Evacuate as soon as possible when you notice warning signs. It is also important to make sure you know how to quickly obtain information about evacuation sites, routes, and evacuation orders (notices from local authorities instructing people to leave the area). For more information about evacuation sites and routes please contact your local government's division in charge of disaster prevention.

Advice for evacuating

(1)Wear comfortable, safe clothing.
Protect your head with a helmet or hood, and wear sports shoes with laces. Never wear rain boots or go barefoot.

(2)Watch your step
There are dangerous items underwater like manholes and gutters. Walk carefully, using a long pole for a walking stick.

(3)Be careful of deep water
Walkable depth is 70 cm for men, 50 cm for women. If the water level is around your hips, wait at high place.

(4)Take care of the elderly and children
In particular, don't let children out of your site.
