Rubbish Disposal

In Japan, the rules for sorting and disposing rubbish are determined by local governments. The regulations are becoming more detailed all the time, and significant changes in the rubbish disposal sysytem will go into effect in Miyazaki City starting in July. Disposing of rubbish is an essential part of daily life, and causes real frustrations if a person is unclear about the regulations. ?MIf you have any questions, please inquire at your local goverment office. We'd like to offer the follow guidelines to make rubbish disposal a stress-free experience.   6月号イメージ

Basic rules for putting out rubbish

-Collection Day
In general, household rubbish is devided into 4 categories: "Burnable", "Non-burnable", "Recyclable" and "Oversized". In most cases, "Burnable rubbish" is collected twice a week, "Non-burnable rubbish" is collected every two weeks. If you put it out on wrong day and leave it, cats and crows may break open the bags.

-Collection Site
There is a designated collection site in your neighborhood. If you are not sure where it is, ask your neighbors.

-Designate Rubbish Bags
Many local governments require the use of special rubbish bags, which can be purchased at the supermarket.
(Some areas do not require the use of special rubbish bags, in which case a clear plastic bag should be used.)

-Paper Recycling on a Rainy Day
If it is raining, please wrap in a clear plastic bag. Some areas require paper recycling to be put out on the following collection day.

Rules for preparing rubbish

-Burnable rubbish
When disposing of kitchen waste, such as tea leaves and coffee beans, try to remove as much water content as possible.

-Non-burnable rubbish
Broken glass and other dangerous items need to be wrapped in newspaper and labeled “ガラス(glass)”or “キケン(dangerous)” in big, red letters for the safety of the rubbish collectors.

-Glass Bottles, Cans, PET Bottles, and Food Containers
These items should be washed before being placed in the rubbish bag. Bottles and cans can be cleaned by filling them with water and shaking them. Hot water should be used for oily items.

-Household appliances(Four types: Air Conditioning Units, Televisions, Refridgerators, and Washing Machines)
These items require a recycling fee (about 2000-5000 yen)

-Personal Computer
Please inquire directly with your computer manufacturer. In m?Most cases, you will be required to apply for collection and pay a recycling fee.(about 3000-4000 yen)
*Please inquire at your local government office for detailed information about rubbish disposal regulations in your area.
